How to Use: City Page

Click on the analog clock in the top-left corner and then on one of the links in the top-right corner to see the current local time in full-screen mode or to open a pop-up window showing the time.

The map on the right shows the city's location within its country and world region. Click on the map to show the city on the Time Zone Map.

Click on See how to dial to find out the country and area codes you need to dial if you want to call someone in the city. Please note that this service includes area codes for landlines only. It does not provide mobile/cell phone codes.

Use the search field to open the City Page for a different location. The search supports ZIP/postal codes for several countries, including the United States and Canada.

You can also enter geographic coordinates (longitude and latitude) to find the same information for any place on Earth.

Flick through the tabs next to the search field to see info about the Weather, Time Zone, DST Changes, and Sun & Moon in the city.

The latter includes a multitude of astronomy information related to the city. It is divided into several different pages, which can be viewed via the links that appear just below the tabs after you click on Sun & Moon:

• Planet visibility

The Time Zone box shows the current time zone and offset from UTC/GMT, taking into account Daylight Saving Time (DST).

The DST boxes show past and/or upcoming Daylight Saving Time switches in the city. No DST is displayed if the city does not have clock changes.

The Difference box displays the time difference between the city and your home location. Click on Set your location to change your home location.

The Sunrise and Sunset boxes show the time and direction of today's sunrise and sunset. Click to see more detailed info for this or other dates.

In the Day length box, you can see today's time span between sunrise and sunset. The second row shows the difference between yesterday's day length and today's day length. A minus (-) shows that today is shorter than yesterday; a plus (+) means that today is longer. See the Yearly Sun Graph for an overview of day length in the city in the course of a full year.

The gray Moon box shows a representation of today's Moon phase and the percentage of the Moon's surface that is illuminated, as seen from the selected city. While the image depicts the Moon phase in real-time, note that the Moon may not be visible, either because it is below the horizon or because it is cloudy.

Today's moonrise and moonset times are displayed at the bottom of the box.

For coastal locations, the High Tide and Low Tide boxes show the high and low tide times for today. Note: these predictions have a certain margin of error, so please do not use them for navigation or other activities that require a high level of precision.

Click on Show More Twilight and Moon Phase Information to view the Solar Noon box. Here, you can see the moment in time when the Sun crosses the city's meridian, which is the instant when it reaches its highest position in the sky and appears either due south, due north, or directly overhead.

The Altitude value shows the maximum altitude the Sun reaches that day, as viewed from the selected city. This is the angle the Sun makes with the horizon (assuming the horizon is perfectly flat).

Click on Show More Twilight and Moon Phase Information to view the three twilight boxes. They show when the three phases of twilight beginn and end on the current day: astronomical twilight, nautical twilight, and civil twilight.

The first line in each box refers to the twilight phase in the morning, when the Sun is still below the horizon, approaching sunrise; the second line shows the beginning and end of the twilight phase in the evening, after sunset.

Click on Show More Twilight and Moon Phase Information to view the Moon phase boxes. They show the local times of the previous and upcoming phase of the Moon.

Click on the links in the left column to use the city as a starting point for different kinds of calculations:

• The Meeting Planner provides a color-coded overview of the best times to have a meeting with participants in this city and in other time zones.
• The Time Zone Converter shows local times around the world that correspond to the local time in the selected city.
• The Event Time Announcer allows you to calculate and share world times for an event happening in this city.
• The Time Difference Calculator shows time differences between this and other cities worldwide.
• The Distance Calculator computes the air distance from this city to a location of your choice.
• The Free Clock service gives you an HTML code for a clock showing the local time in the selected city, which you can embed on your website or blog.

In the bottom-right corner of the page, you will also find a link to the Distance Signpost, a service showing the air distance between this city and other locations surrounding it.

The middle column is dedicated to holidays and calendars for the selected city. Click on the Create calendar... link to see a calendar for this city and the current year.

The links below Upcoming Holidays provide an overview of the next holidays in the city. Click on them to find out more. For a full list, click on More Holidays in... at the bottom.

This column shows a list of airports around the city. They are often ordered by ascending distance, but in some cases, considerations of the airport's size or importance breaks that pattern.

Both options are still available. To access them, first click on the analog clock in the top-left corner.

To view the time in full-screen mode, click on Fullscreen in the top-right corner; to open a pop-up window showing the time, click on Popup Window in the top-right corner. Click on Exit to return to the standard city page display.

Although mistakes can of course always happen, the time we display for each city is most probably correct. Before sending in your error report, please consider the following:

• Many countries and territories regularly change their clocks as Daylight Saving Time (DST) starts and ends. Perhaps there has been a clock change recently that you were not aware of? To check, please see the green DST boxes, which appear roughly in the middle of the page.
• Are you looking at a city in the United Kingdom or Ireland? If so, please note that neither the UK nor Ireland observe GMT while DST is active, so clocks there are 1 hour ahead of GMT during that period.
• If the time seems to be off by a smaller amount, up to 1 or 2 minutes, you may be looking at an outdated version of the page. Please try reloading the page to see if that solves the problem.

Our system supports both 24-hour and 12-hour (am/pm) clock formats. To change the format, please go to My Units and make a selection in the Time Format drop-down, and click Save Settings.

The city page supports several different temperature formats. To choose one, click on the gear wheel symbol in the weather box and make a selection in the Temperature drop-down.

Our database of locations includes thousands of cities worldwide, and we now offer an additional 6 million places via the GeoNames database. If you still don't find your town, please let us know, and we will consider adding it.

When you type the location into the search field, and it suggests several places by the same name, first have a look at the country flag and the description in parentheses to identify the city you are looking for. If it is still unclear, click on one of the locations and check the geographical position on the map or via the longitude/latitude information.

As predictions of future events, any weather forecast always has a certain margin of error and may vary somewhat from one source to another. We use a very reliable provider to obtain the weather data displayed on timeanddate.com. However, as with any other weather forecast, we cannot guarantee that it is correct or predicts the same weather as other forecasts.

If you notice a weather forecast that is repeatedly incorrect, please let us know.

The rise and set times for Sun and Moon are based on the geographic coordinates displayed next to Lat/Long at the top of the page.

Please note that our calculations assume a flat horizon, which is at the same altitude as the observer. This means that both the time and direction of sunrise/sunset and moonrise/moonset differs if there are mountains or other obstacles in the way.

We only show tides for coastal locations that are a maximum of 25 kilometers from a tidal station.

Most days have two high tides and two low tides. However, in some cases, one of them may occur just before or just after midnight. When this occurs, only one high or low tide will be displayed for the current date.

The times we display for high and low tides are predictions with a certain margin of error, so please do not use them for navigation or other activities that require a high level of precision.

Our calculations are based on data provided by tidal stations (see How are the tides calculated? below for further information). The farther away the selected location is from the nearest tidal station, the larger the margin of error. We generally only display tides for locations that are within 25 kilometers of a tidal station.

The UK restricts access to tidal data, so the predictions for UK locations may be less accurate than for locations in other countries.

Many cities have several area codes, so there's not enough space to list them all.

Displaying the correct time for locations around the world is our core business, so we make sure to deliver clocks you can rely on. We use the Network Time Protocol (NTP) to synchronize our servers to a number of time servers operated by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) as well as other similar institutions. This means the time we send to your browser is extremely accurate.

However, there are some factors we cannot control that may cause the time displayed on your screen to be very slightly off. For example, this may be the case if the time signal we transmit is somehow delayed on its way from our servers to your browser. We have a simple but effective mechanism in place to synchronize the client time (the time shown on your screen) to our server time. However, if you are on a very slow internet connection, this synchronization process may be slightly inaccurate. In most cases, this inaccuracy should amount to less than 1 second. If you think the time is slightly off, please refresh the page in your browser.

Yes, our city search engine supports ZIP and postal codes for the United States (5-digit ZIP codes only), Canada (first 3 letters/digits only), Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and Norway.

They are abbreviations for latitude and longitude, which make up the city's geographic coordinates. For more information, please read our explanation of latitude and longitude.

The green Time Zone box shows the location's offset from Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), which is the world's time standard. A negative value means that the location is behind UTC, a positive value means that it is ahead of UTC.

In terms of time, UTC is the same as GMT. However, there is a fine difference between the two.

The blue Difference box shows the time difference between the location and your home city. To select a different home city, click on Set your location below the box.

All directions displayed on the city page and in any other service on timeanddate.com are based on true north, unless otherwise stated.

When there is a holiday in the location you are looking at, a red alert box is displayed near the top of the page. Upcoming holidays are listed under Calendar & Holidays at the bottom of the page. Click on More holidays in... to see a full list of holidays in the current year.

Our tidal predictions are based on an analysis of the historic water levels at tide stations. We then extract the gravitational constituents that make up a tide at a point in time (epoch) and use an algorithm to predict future tides.
